Giving a Voice to the Silenced: Supporting Children Who Stutter in Rwanda

In many parts of the world, especially in developing countries like Rwanda, thousands of children who stutter face a harsh, often invisible reality: a daily struggle not only with their speech, but also with discrimination, misunderstanding, and shame.
Having personally experienced the pain of being a child who stutters, I understand the magnitude of this struggle. Today, I want to share with you our efforts to change this situation and how you can join this efforts.
The Silent Crisis: Stuttering in Disadvantaged Communities
Imagine being a child, excited to learn, but terrified to speak. That’s the reality for many young students who stutter across Africa.
In many Rwandan schools and throughout much of the developing world there’s very little understanding of communication disorders. Teachers are rarely trained to recognize or support students who stutter. Instead, some respond with impatience, ridicule, or even corporal punishment when a child hesitates to speak.
As TUZA, a young boy who stutters, heartbreakingly shared:
“My teacher teases me a lot in class whenever I cannot answer oral questions, and I feel embarrassed and ashamed to come to school.”
Can you imagine the long-term damage that kind of humiliation causes? We can and we’re doing something about it.
Taking Action: Building Supportive School Communities
At the African Stuttering Center, a Rwanda-based nonprofit I help lead, we are committed to fighting this injustice.
Our latest initiative focuses on empowering teachers with knowledge and practical strategies to support children who stutter in their classrooms. In 2024, we trained 98 teachers through workshops themed “Teaching Strategies to Support Students Who Stutter.”
These sessions covered essential topics:

What stuttering is and what it’s not

The root causes of stuttering

Evidence-based therapies used by speech-language pathologists

Concrete actions teachers can take to create a safe, supportive environment
Because when even one teacher is equipped with this knowledge, countless students benefit year after year.
Why It Matters
Schools should never be places of fear. And no child should drop out, miss opportunities, or suffer emotionally simply because they stutter.
This initiative is about more than awareness it’s about justice. It’s about giving children like TUZA the chance to enjoy school, speak freely, and pursue their dreams without fear of being laughed at or punished.
It’s also deeply personal. I was once that child scared to speak, mocked for stuttering, and misunderstood by those meant to guide me. That pain became my purpose.
